Goodbye jellow jackets
By David R. Smith on Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021
Installing two of these 'Fatal Funnels' into an empty and clean large soda bottle was pretty easy, but be very careful cutting the criss-cross slits into the bottle. This can be a very dangerous operation. To start, remove the label on your bottle using soap and hot water. Next screw on the top. I then marked the recommended criss-cross patterns on the bottle using a magic marker. Then I used a strong box cutter razor knife with a new sharp blade. Tip: slowly press the blade tip down into the center of the criss-cross, gradually adding pressure. The blade will slowly start to puncture and penetrate the clear plastic. Be super careful not to cut toward your hand or your body. Once finished with the two criss-cross cuts, I installed two of these 'Fatal Funnels' on the bottle per the included instructions. The funnels fit tightly and have not moved after being used for more than a month now. Per the instructions I used (Kroger brand) apple juice - I filled the bottle about 2-1/2" deep and placed the bottle on a garden table in our back yard. After the 1st sunny day, it had trapped only one bee, but not to worry. The next afternoon, the bottle had trapped about 25 yellow jackets - they eventually drown in the apple juice. After 3 days it had trapped maybe 50 yellow jackets and several giant hornets. After the bees die, the bottle can be easily cleaned out - I poured mine out in the woods and all the dead bees and old apple juice came right out. I rinsed the bottle with water and refilled it again with apple juice. After 4 days I again had caught about 50 yellow jackets. I then prepared a 2nd bottle and moved it to another part of the property and like before, in a day or two it started trapping lots of yellow jackets and a few giant hornets (that look just like huge yellow jackets). After 3-4 weeks our population of dangerous yellow jackets had really diminished.

Didn't work for us
By Sarah Lynch on Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2012
We get wasps around our house quite a bit and my boyfriend's daughter (and my boyfriend a little :) ) is terrified of them, so I bought this in the hope that the wasps would go away and she'd feel more comfortable going outside. Unfortunately, this did not work for us at all. The only thing that was killed was some ants and, I think, a fly. I followed the recommendations regarding the recipe to use -- I used apple juice, sugar, red food coloring, and bits of chicken in two 2-liter bottles. I placed the traps near where I have seen wasps around. Let me say, it did smell awful, and it looked gross, but it didn't catch a thing. The only reason I'm giving this product two stars, instead of one star, is that we only tried using it once (well, twice, in that we baited two traps in two different locations at the same time). Now it seems that the wasps have gone away for the most part, maybe due to the intense heat we've been having lately. I will probably try this product again next year, unless I find anything better. If I try it again, I will update this review. Update 5/22/13: I tried this again this year. I installed the funnels according to the directions and and baited it according to what other reviewers had said worked for them. Again, it didn't work at all. I successfully drowned dozens of ants, that's all. I have no idea how this could work for some people and not for others, but I can't recommend this item, so it gets on star. :( It is also an eyesore -- picture it, an empty 2-liter pop bottle sitting on your deck or porch -- bleh. We called Orkin a few days ago and haven't seen a wasp since. Hope that works for us.
