Lifetime 50 Gallon Compost Tumbler

There was one of these composters in our backyard when we bought our house so we got another like it. They look pretty on the outside, but the door latch mechanism is exposed to the compost inside, so it quickly rusts and eventually locks up, converting the entire composter into an inoperable heap of plastic and metal waste. When this happened with the older composter, I figured it was a fluke, so I called Lifetime and bought replacement door latch parts for about $70. Actually removing the old rusted parts and putting the new parts in was nearly impossible, however, and just a few weeks later I was shocked to discover the new composter's latch was also rusted out. It too has quickly become locked in place within 2 years of purchasing. To top it all off, the spring mechanism that holds the compost chamber in place is now also rusting out after exposure to normal weather conditions. The design of the composter itself is totally unsustainable. Its "Lifetime" is less than 2 years. Hating to create a mountain of trash, which defeats the point of composting in the first place, we now use these composters by leaving the doors unlatched and stirring the compost with a shovel, but the metal rod that runs through the chamber is always in the way. It would have been better if Lifetime could have just designed this composter with sustainability in mind so it actually lasted a lifetime.
