Meets any reasonable expectations, exceeded my own
By stanwhjr on Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2010
This tool performs well what it can reasonably be expected to achieve, making short (and easy) work of splitting small amounts--by which I mean at least the approximate quarter cord I tackled on first use--of seasoned, flat-sawn logs of up to 10-12 inch diameter and 15-inch length. Users needing to split very many and/or very large logs (especially if also very green) and expecting this $44 tool to deliver comparable results as effortlessly as a $500-5000 powered splitter can only be dollar-driven self-deluders, and will be disappointed. This product's few non-positive reviews, while preparing me for disappointment, didn't dissuade a gamble on its modest cost; I'd call my outcome an unequivocal win. The tool's complete portability--it's easily taken to and used at sites lacking adequate unobstructed axe-/maul-swinging space or where even a small portable powered splitter (and requisite fuel) would be an inconvenient haul-in/out--is an added plus. Pending the task's demands, it's absolutely worth its price, and even for users who own or would rent a powered splitter for larger jobs, this tool would be handy for the occasional smaller job that with it could be completed in less time than might be needed to get out, set up, employ, and put away a powered splitter. Irrelevant to the tool itself, but meriting mention is the (highly atypical) 2-day delivery of this part of a multi-item purchase using Amazon's free shipping option. Kudos as due to Amazon's packers and shippers. May this sort of service become the norm.

splitting wood the easy way.

I have only used the slide hammer a,few times, so I can't give it a really good review. The few times I did use it, it worked perfect for what I bought it for. Because I'm used to swinging an axe, sledge hammer, and maul, I was impatient with it, but it worked as it said. Made it a little sharper, as you most likely have do with any blade out of a box, but not so much as to put it on the grinder. I bought it because sometimes the kids wan to get involved, and this is about the safest tool for splitting wood there is. Any size log can be split in the same manner you would do if you liked swinging axes. Start a split, put another wedge in the split, and word to the outside of the log. I had my nieces,15, and 14 do 2 big logs. As much as they liked it and thought it was easy, their attention span quickly took over and they were gone, but not before telling me that they actually liked it because it was so easy, and now they use it as part of their workout. Log first, then run. If wood is getting a little low, my sister will go out and destroy a few logs. She also says she likes the workout she gets. So, it is more work, but safe. There are other slide hammer type splitters, but they take a person who is used to chopping wood. Keep this somewhat Sharpe, and anyone can get it done. I have a nephew on the autism spectrum, granted he isn't that bad, but he gets to have some fun working next to his uncles, where he likes it best. Seems to be a well made tool. The price was better than anything I saw anywhere he net. So I gave it a try, it wouldn't have broke the bank if it wasn't good. Took the chance. Does the job I wanted it to do. I'm happy with it. The 3 stars are only because I haven't used it too much myself. Bet its good for camping.
