Solid and gets the job done
By Mike Towles on Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020
This is the first miter saw that I ever purchased. I spent a decent amount of time researching miter saws and finally decided on this one. So with that being said, this saw is fantastic. It is built solid, has a good weight to it, it doesn't feel like it is going to break apart. There is very little plastic to this saw. So right out of the package you can see that Dewalt does a great job packing in this item so things don't shift. There were very few items that you had to attach and that is a good thing, it means that the saw is really one solid piece of hardware. The first cut that I made was nearly perfect. You will want to adjust the zero so you get straight cuts. Now for the blade. This comes with a 32 tooth blade. This is great for just cutting, if you want perfect miters, spend the money and get yourself a good blade don't judge this saw by it miters with the stock blade that it comes with. The carrying handle is solid and I did not feel like it was going to fall apart when I picked it up. I gave the saw 4 star for maneuverability only because with the sliding capabilities you need to make sure you have clearance to make those types of cuts. I ended up making a mobile miter saw station to compensate for this, but with the weight of this saw don't expect to be lugging this 3 flights of stairs and not slip a word or two that you may not want others to hear. Now for the saw itself. It is very smooth and very easy to adjust. There is a little locking pin that you will need to pull out when you get it out of the box and I keep it locked so my little ones don't try to play with it. All you need to do is depress the saw down and at the joint of the arm there is a locking pin that will unlock the saw. (it took me a minute to figure this out so I thought I would add it here) This is a great saw, you get good cuts, it will last a long time, and the price point is very fair. Buy this item if you are doing a lot of DIY projects.

This is not the original DWS779 ... some features have been removed.
By Haifa on Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020
Firstly, this is a really good saw ... it is accurate and powerful. However, DeWalt has changed a number of features on this this. Please be the DWS779 that you will get is not the same DWS779 that people got a few years ago. Please look at the attached picture for a comparison of an OLD DWS779 and a NEW DWS779. There are 5 key difference: #1. The old dws 779 came with a higher quality 60 tooth blade. The new dws 779 comes with a lower quality 32 tooth blade. The 32 tooth blade is great for rough construction cuts ... but if you are doing trim work, you will want a higher quality blade with more teeth. This adds to overall cost. #2. The old DWS 779 has a special back fence that allows for cutting extra wide material up to 16". You basically build a custom deck (1.5” inches thick and use the two holes in the fence to secure it). The new Dws 779 has removed these holes which prevents you from attaching the special deck. Now the max width is around 13.75 (maybe 14”). #3. The old DWS 779 has crown stops (Pawls) that allow for easily setting the bevel angle of the saw to 22.5 & 33.9 degrees. This is usual for cutting crown in flat orientation. On the new DWS779 the crown stops (pawls) have been removed. #4. Old DWS 779 has a slide lock lever... this sets the slide in optimal position for max height vertical cuts. This is also helpful for quickly locking the slide and not having to use the screw in the back. There is no slide lock lever on the new DWS 779. #5. The old DWS 779 has a kerf plate consisting of 2 pieces. This allows you to adjust the gap where the blade drops to give support to narrow and precise cuts. The new DWS 779... no adjustment ability due to kerf plate being one piece. These are all changes that probably helps dewalt save on costs. However, this saw is still advertised with an MSRP of 559. This would make sense if you were actually getting the dws779 with the original design. I think they should be more clear and give this saw a new model number so people are aware of the changes. I’m on the fence on whether I will keep or return this saw. If you want all the features of the original DWS779 you will need to buy the dws780 (all features are on the DWS780 plus you get the XPS cut light).
