Quality tool that is faster and easier than a traditional hand tool for pop rivets
By P. Schmidt on Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021
I bought one of these Astro model ADR14 tools to use instead of my collection of three hand rivet tools (the traditional pliers style), because my old arthritic hands don't like squeezing the levers anymore. The tool chucks up into any drill motor, whether it is cordless electric, corded electric, pneumatic, as long as that drill motor has a slow-speed/high-torque mode that can allow its use as a screwdriver. The back end of the tool has a conventional 1/4" hex shaft, just like any screwdriver bit you could chuck up in a drill. The manufacturer recommends that for best results, a cordless drill motor should have an 18V battery; cordless drills with lesser batteries such as 12V and 14.4V, etc; will still work, but will not be able to deliver enough torque for large sizes of pop rivet, or pop rivets made of harder materials such as steel, or if they work they might exhaust a lesser battery after setting just a few rivets. The tool comes with a blow-molded case that holds it and the six included 'nosepieces" (3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 7/32", 1/4"), plus the included small wrench that is used to change nosepieces on the tool. In a rather significant screw-up, the case is configured to precisely fit the tool with the 1/4" nosepiece installed, but that nosepiece has a shallower nut on its end, and some of the other nosepieces have a deeper nut, and if any of those are installed on the tool, it will not fit into the case; I used an X-Acto knife to carve out a bit of plastic to allow ANY nosepiece to fit. The tool has a maximum mandrel draw distance of 0.5" (1/2"). This means that in order for this tool to properly set (install) a pop rivet, there can be no more than 0.5" of the rivet extending past the materials being joined by the rivet, when you initially stick the rivet through those pieces. I should clarify that the mandrel's "head" at the end of the rivet does not count in this measurement; only the body of the rivet itself is important here. Note that Astro also has a nearly identical tool, model ADR36, which costs a few dollars less, but which is not rated for the larger 5/32" and 1/4" rivets, and its kit does not include those nosepieces. Astro's website suggests that the ADR36's maximum mandrel draw is 0.7", which is a bit longer than the ADR14's maximum draw of 0.5". Except for that, I don't see any reason to buy the ADR36 instead of the ADR14. This tool is designed for use with pop-rivets (blind rivets) made from aluminum, copper, steel, and stainless steel. The harder materials and/or the larger sizes require the most torque from the drill motor you use. The entire tool is made of CNC machined aluminum and steel parts, and it can all come apart for repair or replacement of any component, if needed. Mostly it screws apart, but at least one snap ring is used as well. In practice, you use this tool just like a traditional hand rivet tool, except your drill motor does the work of drawing back on the rivets' mandrels. Run the drill motor clockwise to draw, and reverse it to counterclockwise to loosen the internal draw chuck and drive the snapped-off mandrel out of the tool. You must hold onto the knurled body of the tool when running the drill motor, otherwise the whole tool will spin rather than draw on the rivet's mandrel. However, you don't need to grip the tool tightly, just a light and easy grip is required. I can't fault anything about this tool (except for the aforementioned case snafu). It seems to be a very good design, well manufactured from quality materials and well packaged.

Will not eject spent rivets!
By Alice Crouch on Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018
Unfortunately this tool did not work for me. It pops the rivets fine but will not eject the spent rivets. After the pop rivet process one is supposed to be able to reverse the pop rivet tool until one hears a clicking noise and then remove the rivet. This never worked. Because of this the tool has to come apart after every rivet and even then you have to use pliers to remove the spent rivet. This is too bad because the tool seems to be made well with a heavy feel and smooth operation. After taking the tool apart several times you can see that there is a heavy sprint pressing down on the retractor jaws which prevents the spent rivet from coming out. Adjusting the collet never allowed me to remove the rivet without taking the tool apart.
