Nearly Flawless! No Green Thumb Needed!!! Set and mostly forget
By iamtheoneoff on Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2018
TAKE 2... TO THE AMAZON REVIEW POLICE/CENSORSHIP....I spent 30 minutes writing this, yet you arbitrarily rejected without reason. Too long? Too real? If you choose to reject again, please provide specifics. Also nice that the rejected review doesn't save for edit like it used on past rejections. This is a great way to encourage the type of reviews you don’t want.REVIEW:Best purchase ever! This is the first time in a long time I can say I found high quality product that has been no drama, no gimmicks, no hidden monthly or annual fee BS subsidizing the product (if it had, you’d be paying $5 a month just for the privelege to use the lights remotely) and I’ll bet someone at MG actually tested this product extensively before release, which took longer, but they nailed it as a result of this diligence. In contrast many companies nowadays have lazy startup mentality which says.... just throw stuff out like spaghetti and see what sticks and the let the consumer do our job and test it for us, then we’ll “iterate” based on the complaints; even if we never get it right. LOl. So...It’s nice for once to have a product with zero issues, and to NOT have to play proxy QA and software tester. 100% of what was claimed is true. This is the real deal and it works even if you’ve never planted a thing in your life.So...Going on 85 days of use and already harvested a boatload of basil and dill, all seeds produced and it’s been nearly flawless. The WiFi controlled push notifications like water and food are some of the best features of this along with remote control of light and schedule. Literally, just add water and food when it tells you to and you’re good to go.Pro Tips:—Crank the light on as much as possible in the beginning. We did 2PM to 8AM daily.—WiFi will trigger instant action when turning lights or pump on or off manually—Make sure domes are properly seated to keep hot air in—Make sure plants aren’t jacking each other’s light. The dill was notorious for this.—The dill is a PITA, grows like a weed, and likes to encroach and dominate the lighting. It’s a nuisance and eventually got yanked once used. You’ll want to move away daily from other plans as needed - it will grow back toward the light quickly, even sometimes same day—The mint plant is another nussiance plant that had a mind of its own and grew like a vine. Yanked.—Eventually some plants like basil will grow tall enough to slam into lights and collect moisture on the top. Keep em away and route stems and leaves around the top otherwise it will kill and burn leaves making them useless.—Pick the bud like flowers daily on the basil once fully grown for faster fuller growing. Wife’s tip.—You can fill the water to the very top past the fill line despite what it says. We do. Do at your own risk of course.—Do not overfeed plants. Yes, this is legit. Miracle grow actually puts a nice down to earth warning on the bottle for the guys among us that think more food = more power = more better. Not the case apparently. Lol. Our wives already know better.—Save the plastic soil holders and domes once dead plants are yanked - They cost a fortune to replace—27.4W per hour is average power consumption with light on - So time accordingly if you have time of use electrical rates—This is very bright when on, so, locate accordingly. It serves as a night light for us.—Do not use filtered water. This is not a Keurig. You’ll rob the plants of minerals in tap water. We use cold water from the hot faucet (before it gets hot). More minerals in hot water tank = more better. YMMV.—If you have a black thumb and want low effort, high return and no drama - use Genuine Miracle Grow products. I don’t work for or have any connection to MG, but will say their stuff works for a reason. You get what you pay for.—You can make your own pods from your own seeds with MG components such as the holder, domes, and soils, nutrients, all of which they sell individually. We’ll be trying this next.—Set your pump time accordingly. We do 5 mins on 55 mins off. Roots will fill entire container, so circulation of nutrients is essential.—Be careful to not spill water on the display when filling. It’s not waterproof as far as I can tell.—Make sure to accept push notifications on the app, otherwise you won’t get the notifications to feed or water—When you get the food or water warning - do it right away!! It usually means you’re near bone dry.—When plants are fully grown, expect to refill water every 3-5 days. These bad boys chug more water like beer as they get bigger and you’ll be filling more often you might expect.Cons:—Nothing is cheap when replanting. Pricing I suppose is fair to keep viable long term support rather than this end up as another hit it and quit it company peddling as soon to be dead IoT product. It would be nice to see smaller seed kits and replacement pieces for sale rather than having to buy a Costco size quality.—Can’t schedule lighting (and cost) by day and time of week when electricity is cheaper for some of us. One size fits all schedule. I emailed miracle grow and they stated they’d pass on for consideration. More people should ask for this as some states TOU will become mandatory.—A very short list of complaints as you can see

Expensive for what it is, but appears to work well.

The price seems high for what this actually does. It's a glorified fish tank pump with LED lights. Still, it's solidly constructed and much quieter than I thought it would be. It's also much brighter than I thought it would be - so don't think about putting this in your bedroom, unless you like a lot of light. The assembly was extremely easy, but the instructions should be re-ordered. It has you assemble the entire unit (and fill with water), only to find out that to connect to WiFi, you need the barcode which is UNDER the water tank you just filled. Setting up the mobile app was much harder than it should have been. The iOS app asks you to scan the barcode - but by now you've already turned your AeroGarden on, which means the LED lights are shining bright, and you can't see anything on your phone. The instructions say to use your camera flash (but you have to exit out of the app to turn on your flashlight). After multiple failed attempts, it finally worked. Here's my tip - with one hand, hold your phone with the app open looking for the barcode. Use your other hand to shield the LED lights so you can see your phone screen, and so the brightness doesn't overwhelm the camera.I've had this in use for 4 days, and expect my first plants to sprout tomorrow. I imagine over time, the initial investment will start to pay off, but it looks like the seedpods are priced extremely high too. $15 for seeds for 6 plants - you can buy full grown plants for less.
