Light, compact, well made and easy to setup hanging or on the ground

Review of the ACOPOWER 120W Foldable Solar Panel with the ProteusX 20A PWM controller For our RV we were looking for some solar power as we exclusively boondock, and do not like running the generator. We looked at different possible solutions like either hard mounted on the roof flexible or classic panel, or some portable/foldable solutions. As we camp a lot during winter months, we decided to go with a portable/foldable solution as in winter you need to be able to orient the panels more vertically to catch most of the lower sun. Even if in the future we decide to mount hard panels on the roof, we will still use those portable/foldable panels in winter or when park in the shade. At this point, we looked at portable hard panel vs. soft foldable panels. Due to the weight (around 33lbs vs 8lbs for a soft foldable), and the space we decided to go with a foldable panel. And we looked at the most watts we could get. We looked at different brands/products (Dokio, renogy, hsqs, lensun, etc.) and while not the most powerful panel (in terms of watts) the Acopower 120W foldable panel looked really solid with a good controller (and we knew it was not a MPPT one). The other brands were either not enough powerful or really looked flimsy and not really well made. When we received the Acopower 120W foldable panel, we were surprised at how well it was made and looked really solid. We are happy by our choice, and it was a breeze to setup the panel and the controller. The panel itself is fold as a suitcase and open up when deployed. The legs in the back are great for when not hanging it on the side of the RV. We are using strong suction cups to hold the panel on the side of the RV. For sure if it is too windy the back legs will not be enough to hold the panel but this is not the problem of the Acopower panel but due to the nature of the foldable panel being light (and we were looking at light here vs. the 30+ lbs of solid portable panel as going to be a pain to setup everyday). The PWM controller is basic but is, like the panel, built really well and offers the needed features. We are happy by the controller being simple and not offering extra useless features, like that it is simple and straightforward to use the controller. The provided wiring and connector are well made and enough long. I like that you can detach the MD4 connectors easily without needing a specific tool. We also got the Acopower 20ft extension wires for when we want to put the panel away for the RV if the RV is parked in the shade. We installed a SAE connector on the side of the RV in order to be able to plug directly the SAE connector coming out of the Acopower PWM controller. Being winter, it is hard to check on the maximum output of the panel, but so far the output is equivalent to hard solar panel when exposed to the same winter sun. We will update this review once we get some solid decent sun. Bottom line, this Acopower 120W foldable solar panel and its PWM 20A controller is a super light, compact and solid foldable panel that it is easy to setup (hanging on side of RV with suction cups, on the ground hold by its 3 foldable back legs or flat on any surface including an Rv awning), and to put away in a RV, while still offering good performance as any similar wattage panel. At the price of this panel, we wish that AcoPower would have offer a MPPT controller instead of a PWM in order to get the most out of the 120W panel. Update (2/4/2021): we did some test in full sun for a couple of days (still winter sun here in California in February), and the 120W solar panel was able to produce over 120 watts during the couple of hours around midday. Here are few of of the data we collected on one day (directly measuring the solar panel output without the controller): - 12pm: 24.1V and 5.2A => 125 watts - 1pm: around the same values than above at noon - 2pm: 23V and 4.8A => 110 watts - 3pm (with also some light clouds coming in): 21V and 4.1A => 86 watts Again those values were taken in a sunny day in early February in California; we are pretty stocked with the power generated by the panel. We will update this review in few months around spring time.

Great When it Worked

Purchased to use with my LiONCooler in Sept. 2020. The cooler is going strong, but pulled the solar panel out for a camping trip and it doesn't work. The charge controller works, but the panels are not producing any electricity (I checked with a voltmeter). I don't see any bad solder points. I only used it while camping, but maybe the desert sun fried the cells. Still, it's a good company.

First impressions

Out of the box I am rather impressed. Well packaged, easy to set up, only 1 thing I had an issue with, and 1 thing that I was surprised wasn't there. First - the issue. After taking the plastic vinyl wrap that protects the panels off during shipping, the panels were covered with adhesive residue. I reached out to Acopower, and they eventually got back to me about what to use to clean the panels without damaging them, but I had already used some Plexus plastic cleaner/polish and various microfiber towels and got rid of the residue. Hooked everything up and works like a champ. I was a little surprised that there were no USB ports on the charge controller, especially since less expensive options from Eco-Worthy offer 2, albeit their controller isn't "waterproof". Looks like it should hold up fine to the type of use it will see.
Light, compact and unbreakable PV

I bought this 120W portable PV system to recharge the auxiliary batter that powers the refrigerator in our restored VW Westy. Took it out of the box and was charging the battery 5 minutes later. Couldn't be easier, pic attached. No stars for Tech Support because I didn't need any. Well designed, lightweight, compact and folds up into itself to create a storage case. The integrated kickstands are a particularly nice touch, as are the grommets to stake it down. It's so light (~10kg) that a light breeze can topple it over. I'm going to change the battery clamps with electrical connectors so the charge controller can be permanently installed, and get an extension cable for when I want to get more than 10 feet from the van. The industry-standard cable connectors (SAE & MC4) will make this a breeze. Hitting the road this weekend for a full scale test. Calculations say we should be able to keep the fridge going indefinitely with this setup.

I have only used it for a short time. Seems to work as advertised. The instructions were a little difficult to follow but I was able to get everything connected as indicated in the instructions. I am pleased with the portability of the unit. It's lighter and more compact than I anticipated.
A fine product go charging Rv batteries

I have had a previous version of this product, for over 2 years up until I broke one of the arrays. Accidentally. I purchased this one as a replacement, and have not been disappointed. 1st, it weighs about 8 lbs, and small enough to fit on the dashboard of my Rv. 2nd, it does a fine job of charging the house batteries, and last, it folds up quickly and easily.

My husband and i thought about adding a solor panel to the roof of our vehicle a decided against it becaue of the work involved and we did want to drill holes into the roof of our vehicle. This panel is the perfect companion to our LiONCooler. We are so happy with our purchase. We will never have to worry about any power outages. It is quick and easy to setup. All the cords fit unto the pouch on the back and because it is 100% portable we can move it as the sun moves.
I returned it

Check polarity on Charge Controller before using

Since this was to be a plug-n-play system, and the reviews were good, I didn't bother to do a test run before heading to the mountains to camp. After connecting the system, the controller had no display and the battery was not charging. After coming home and with the help of ACOPower support I found that I had two problems, (1) the SAE connector I purchased to leave connected to my battery was backwards compared to the SAE connector on the system, therefore my positive and negative connections were backwards. Once corrected the controller was active, but I was getting a "P02/prc error code. (2) After looking at the manual on line (not provided with the system) I found the error message was for "Battery Good/Solar Reversed". When I switched the connections on the back of the controller for the solar panel it started working as normal. The factory had installed the MC4 connectors backwards, which reversed the negative and positive. Even though I think their quality control should have caught the reversed polarity on the solar panel before shipping, I still gave ACOPower a full 5 stars because they were ready to stand behind their product and the problem was an easy fix.
Service support

I ordered 1 panel first. Liked it so much I ordered 2 more. Great service support. The first panel (which I ordered in October or 11 months ago) output dropped to just 2 2 amps compared to the new panels that each produced 5.5 amps each. I called and they said they have improved the model (panel was also a bit floppy) They are sending me a replacement panel. Also. I really like the 20 amp controller. Much better than the 10 amp I got with the first panel The display gives valuable information and works great. I like how it resets the daily total each day. Using it to charge my 2 100 amp lithium iron phosphate batteries 3 panels in parallel are the max number for the 20 amp controller (unless panels are in shade or not oriented to face sun. On cloudy days with panel flat I get about 1 amp from a panel. if clouds thin but still no shadow, output increases a bit.
