Excellent Generator! Fantastic Value!
By Dave Williams on Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2023
I am getting ready to do some Disbursed Camping/Primitive Camping, so I wanted a little 1000W generator, just "in case." I obsessively researched the smaller Inverter Generators prior to making this purchase. I strongly considered Predator, Honda, Westinghouse and Generac. And I looked at the rest. I had never even heard of Champion Generators. And I didn't know about the "dual fuel" (gas and propane) Inverter/Generators. WHAT A GREAT GENERATOR!! After I connected the LPG hose (provided) to my own 20gal propane tank (BBQ size), connecting the propane hose to the generator took EXACTLY ONE SECOND. Simply PRESS the hose into the quick-connect coupling on the generator (same as an air tool fitting) and YOU ARE CONNECTED! Takes ONE SECOND! No more nasty gas! STARTUP: After priming it with propane according to instructions, the Champion generator started on the 2nd pull. Yes! NOISE: Not loud at all, but it does GROWL a bit more loudly when under a load. WEIGHT: Excellent! I have 12-year-old 2000W Inverter/Generator that still works well. However, it is Longer, Taller and Wider than this Champion, and it weighs 62 pounds! That's over 50% more weight than this little 40lb Champion, and it makes a big difference. BREAK IN PERIOD: I did the mandatory 5-hour break-in period with the oil supplied by Champion. After the 5 hours, I drained the break-in oil and it was completely GRAY slimy liquid. LOAD TEST: I plugged a 13W LED shop light and a 1500W simple water boiler (glass kettle that just boils water rather quickly), and turned them both on. Therefore, total "start-up" (or "surge") watts is 1513 watts, max. IMPORTANT MISTAKE MADE BY AMAZON OR CHAMPION: Next to the photo of this generator on Amazon.com are the watts figures for propane as being 1800W Startup and 1440W Running. HOWEVER, further down the same Amazon page, in two separate places, it lists propane as 2000W and 1530W. This is also what the Operator's Manual lists: 2000W/1530W. Why does this matter? See rest of review... LOAD TEST, CONTINUED: Running the generator on propane I had 1513 watts connected with two appliances. The Champion generator easily handled the load including bringing the water to a boil (energy hog). However, after the water comes to a boil, the kettle will continue to boil the water for a few more seconds. During this "extra" period of boiling, the Circuit Breaker TRIPPED, thereby ending the Load Test. Based on this test, it appears that the LOWER figure given for the propane wattage output (1440W) is Accurate and the higher propane watt rating (1530) is Wrong. FUEL USE: I connected a fully topped-off 20-lb BBQ tank for the initial 5-hour break-in period. After the 5 hours of continuous use I expected the propane tank to feel much lighter. That's not what happened. Instead, after 5 hours the tank was still very heavy as if NO propane had been used at all. I was pleasantly surprised. CONCLUSION: This Champion 2000W dual-fuel generator is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is so good, that I feel like buying another one, even though I don't need one! This Champion generator is better in all metrics, including PRICE, than all the other generators I considered. SIDE NOTE: Now that I know how EASY, CLEAN, CONVENIENT and EXCELLENT using Propane is, I will NEVER add a drop of gasoline (yuck!) into this generator. Never!

Burns oil and leaks oil into airfilter (UPDATE #2)
By David W. on Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2021
UPDATE 11/23/21-(scroll down for original review) For the first 30 hours with the 2nd generator I thought I was good. Had minmal oil in airbox and no smoking. After 30 hours are when my problems started. Was running it all night on eco mode to run a fan in a cabin and woke up the next day to it running really rough. Spark plug was fouled and covered with black residue. Cleaned it and ran it the second night, started out fine but then spark plug fouled and could not keep running. I am now at 48 hours and the generator will not handle a load without putting tons of smoke. I notice this smoking problem is especially bad after running on eco then switching to normal. I believe excessive oil is getting sucked into carburator through the crankcase ventilation system. Did some tests after this trip and the smoke did seem to clear up after running it on full power for 30min. but im disappointed it won't run in eco without fouling the plug. I bought this originally for the quiet eco mode but if I can't even run on eco this is almost worthless. Maybe there's some good ones out there but I've gotten 2 duds in a row. Will never buy champion again! I stand by my original review. I know it's tempting because of the now 3 yr. warranty but if you get a dud dealing with the hassle of trying to get a new one is not worth it. Customer service is a joke. UPDATE 4/22/21-about 6 weeks ago I finally got a replacement unit. I called the service number and after nearly 2 hours on hold I talked with someone who tried to convince me that the smoking issue and oil in airbox was normal. After arguing for about 15 minutes I was finally told to take the unit to a repair service center in my area. It took a week for the repair shop to tell me that nothing was wrong and it's not leaking oil or burning oil. Well i got it back and it was still leaking oil into airbox and burning oil. I took it back again and they finally agreed to talk with champion about sending me a replacement. It is very sad that the customer has to go through this process just to get a replacement unit. Terrible customer service. If your unit has problems be prapered to put up a fight with customer service and take it to a repair center. Consider buying something else. All of this said, the new unit doesnt seem to smoke (yet) but still getting some oil into airbox. I can live with some drops of oil in airbox as long as its not burning oil. Will not buy a champion product again. (Original review) Do not buy! Apparently there is a major defect with the current batch of model # 100692 generators! I ordered on Dec 31st 2020 and did not start it up until a few days ago. I ran it for 2.5 hours with less than 50% load and noticed smoke coming from it whenever it reved up or when under load. I stopped it and opened it up and the inside of the airbox was coated with oil. I cleaned it up and ran it again for another 2.5 hours with less than 50% load per instructions hoping this issue would clear up after the 5 hour break in period was complete. The problem got worse. I have emailed customer support but it's been a few days and I have not heard back. I would highly advise NOT getting this generator until Champion works out their current quality control issues. other people have started to report very similar issues in the last few weeks. I am extremely dissapointed and frustrated because this thing had good reviews. I researched generators to death and thought this was the best deal out there. I got the impression Champion was better quality than other brands with similar generator styles but apparently not. Should have probably gone with the cheaper WEN 2000w model. I repeat, DO NOT BUY!
