VERY HAPPY!
By Paul on Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2018
I ordered the 21142 (18"/10amp) model to replace an aging light-weight, single-line Toro trimmer that was just about burnt out. I wanted another electric trimmer, to avoid having to mess with gas and oil, but I also wanted a higher-powered model with the motor at the top end, to enable me to add third-party trim heads or other attachments. After watching some of the YouTube videos and reading both older and newer reviews, it was obvious that this trimmer has undergone numerous improvements, over time. With that in mind, I decided to purchase directly from Amazon (i.e. Ships from Amazon) to ensure sufficient inventory turnover, so I'd get one of the newer, improved models. (I bought mine in mid-April 2018. It arrived in a long, slim, printed BROWN cardboard container with no imagery). First impression ... this puppy is heavy and very robust! I am very impressed with the build quality. After assembly, I did a trial run to get myself acclimated to the feel and cut of a 2-line trimmer. I merely used my existing 100' 16-gauge extension cable. I wasn't running the unit continuously but in typical spurts around my lawn. The cable got only very slightly warm and the motor was running just fine, so I don't think I'll need a thicker cable for an average edging run, but I will monitor this during future trims. Time will tell, but I am very happy with my purchase. *** UPDATE 04/16/2018 *** Today, I used the trimmer to attack some weeds and long grass in the utility alley behind my house, as a longer test. I did behind my house, on either side of the driveway and for several houses on either side of me. It tore through everything, like butter, but my 100' 16/3 cable got barely warm. I will say the unit is heavy, so you really need to adjust the "assistant" (loop) handle for your height and balance. Being so powerful, it will take a bit of getting used to, but well worth it! *** UPDATE 04/22/18 *** After the supplied trim line run out, I decided to try the leftover .065 line for my old unit, just to save wasting it. The .065 line worked very well and did a great cut at high power. To assist me when edging, I put a piece of duct tape on the grass shield and simply line things up to the cement driveway, etc.

Can't get extra spools (or other parts)- refilling is a pain
By MajB on Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2023
I wish I had read more of the other 1-star reviews here, but I took the words of a couple of 'best for this" sites, and when I used the trimmer I was happy with its function- I had no trouble with the safety switch a few complained of- found it just fine and useful. Trimmer cut well and was not too awkward to use although I am barely 5'4" and in my 70s. It bumped out trimmer cord just fine. BUT when the cord ran out, the trouble began- this is the first double-line I have dealt with. The diagrams in the manual were not easy to see details & instructions seemed to conflict with physical reality, I hunted for YouTube videos-not one had the same type of head and spool my 21142 has. I went to maker's site- many people were asking questions-many were given urls to pages or videos as answers. Not once did any of the many urls I tried went to a working page and the videos said they were private, and could not be viewed- one person had already written about this and a response said the rep was emailing him a video- idk what the results were of that, but the rep who said they sent it obviously did not address the non-functioning urls & private videos situation for the rest of the customers, since they still don't work. Apparently, you are supposed to be able to buy the entire head of the trimmer, if you want an additional spool or need a replacement bumper or any other part connected to cutting, but from what I have read, I am not confident that would work on the one I have, and most of the places mentioning it said it was out of stock. The prices listed for it were at least $30-40. So, either I return the trimmer, or I put up with having to stop in the middle of work and waste time fighting with the spool to refill it before I can get on with the job. And Greenworks actually says in answers to questions on their site that they do NOT make or sell just the spool- but you can buy a whole replacement head. They also said that you can't use the smaller diameter cord- just the 0.80". Meanwhile here on Amazon there are pictures showing a spool with smaller cord being sold with the 21142 trimmer- but in many reviews people are saying they do not work for the 21142, and yet the misleading pictures and descriptions are not changed, so buyer beware. The same problems are true if you want to buy any of those attachments shown that are supposed to work with this tool- can't find here or on manufacturer's site- they say compatible parts can be had from 3-4 other companies they mention, but they do not give part numbers or any help about them. I am really getting fed up with manufacturers of tools like this who make something, but do not carry the parts for it that are likely to wear, break or be wanted to work with the tool as advertised, but rather leave it up to the buyer to try to figure out what may work, and deal with having to order and return the ones that don't work. I won't buy again from a company that pulls that, certainly not via mail order- maybe if I could get it at a box store and also see the replacement parts and attachments right there to be sure they worked and were available. I am disappointed in both Greenworks and Amazon.
