Installation CAN be simple if you know what you are doing!
By J. Keith on Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2023
I'm guessing I twisted and turned the device on my own before installing and I probably should not have. Lesson learned: Don't play with it before installing! Bosma was kind enough to tell me to return and ask for a replacement and that is what I did. The second device arrived, and after having installed the first one with no luck, at least I now knew how to install it! But a simple thing happened to stop it! It was extremely humid that day and the provided tape simply didn't hold, and the tape gave way as I was trying to unscrew the bolts, th deadbolt fell out of the door! Warning: DO NOT INSTALL ON A HUMID DAY! I paired it with my Echo devices, and can ask any of them to lock/unlock the door. I love that! Plus, the Bosma or Alexa app lets me set up lock/unlock based on location, and that has worked well, too! The device itselt is huge! But I can eyeball it and know my door is locked which I didn't always know when I had the monochromatic thumb lock. Plus my phone would now tell me if the lock was blocked or the door was ajar. I do like having that level of security since I have left the door unlocked and/or ajar overnight! It happens! 9/20 update: I added the keypad. It is what I imagined it would be. One finger touch and the door unlocks! This especially good if I'm just working in my yard and not "gone" waiting for auto-unlock. I'm happy about it except for one thing. Whether you choose to drill holes or simply use the tape to fix to a wall, neither one is more secure than the other because you can lift the device right off of the holder! I took this picture with it mounted next to my Ring doorbell, which is fixed, and cannot simply be lifted off. That is what I wish this pad was like. I'll live with it. Also, look at my pictures. The tiny little screw driver that you will need again when it comes time to replace batteries -- where am I going to keep it? Because if you don't, you won't be able to change batteries. While it is very good and easy to set up, I imagine maintaining it might not be so easy as the indoor unit will be.

Not recommended, mostly because of Auto-Lock feature
By Juan Ito on Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022
Update (Oct 14, 2022) Keypad started to intermittently fail starting July 2022. Because Auto Lock always locks the door immediately after the door is closed, when the door is just slightly ajar, the Bosma device attempts to lock the door incessantly, and if the door jamb is in the way of the bolt, the mechanism will just keep trying and trying, thus wearing out both the batteries and the motor. Eventually, this caused the motor to fail. To Bosma's credit, they sent me a replacement under warranty for both. However, I will not be reinstalling it. Summary (updated April 29, 2022): Easy to install, 4/5. App setup and usage: 3/5. Wireless auto-unlock FAILS 90% (yes, ninety per cent) of the time for me (only 10% for August). Keypad fingerprint feature fails only 20% of the time. Entering code on keypad works 99% of the time. The Aegis lock cannot tell when door is slightly ajar, and tries to auto-lock when it is ajar until someone closes the door. It always auto-locks within ONE SECOND of being physically closed (even though the app says the delay is 30 seconds), and this cannot be changed (extremely annoying when you want to go outside for just a few seconds to get the mail or something). Bosma has no plans to allow the user to change this setting. Every time I call support, my only option is to leave a voice mail to an individual person (who never calls back). I don't think it's possible to talk to anyone for support. --- Long version: Auto-unlock works maybe 1 time out of 10 for me. Often I will return home, stand at the door for several seconds, and nothing happens. Then when I open the Bosma app, the Bluetooth icon that indicates a connection to the lock is gray. I then need to tap the icon for it to turn white and connect to the lock, and only after that happens does it "auto"-unlock (auto in quotes because it's NOT automatic if I have to open the app). And yes, I have set the location services to "always" for the app. The Aegis lock lacks an option to delay auto-locking after the door is physically closed. (Its competitor August has this feature.) Literally within ONE second of closing the door, the Aegis lock automatically locks itself. There is an auto-unlock delay that you can set, but it only delays the auto-lock when the door has been unlocked by the app or auto-unlocked, not when the door has been physically closed. This is extremely annoying because if I walk out the door, take 2 or 3 steps, and then realize that I forgot something (like my phone) inside... I have to get out my phone or use the keypad. This is actually the reason I bought a keypad, to get back inside without having to remember to take my phone with me when I take out the garbage, or get the mail. It has been a very cold winter in NY, and I don't want to be outside in below freezing temperatures not one second longer than necessary, and because Aegis Smart Lock locks right away, I have resorted to leaving the door slightly ajar, which is terrible (but necessary) when it is 16° F outside. Which leads to another problem: when the door is just slightly ajar, the lock attempts to lock itself, no matter how many times I have re-calibrated it. By design, it only knows if it is open or closed. It needs to be able to also know when the door is just slightly ajar (again, its competitor August can do this). The only reason I didn't return the Bosma Aegis smart lock is because it is much less expensive than August, its app is better than the August app in many ways (although sadly, not when it comes to auto locking and unlocking), and although the keypad fingerprint fails 20% of the time, entering the code works all of the time, so that makes it usable. I have written to Bosma about these issues, and they have replied with the standard "Your feedback is important to us and we take it seriously." but they have yet to actually address the issues.
