Shorted on first use... waited over a month for customer service... gave up

I purchased this due to power outages in this area. Figured it was a perfect option since it used the same battery as several of my yard tools. I plugged a battery in and turned it on to make sure it actually came on. Less than a week later... BOOM... power outage... I grabbed the inverter a battery and a lamp. The lamp never came on, but there were some interesting smells. Panicked, I disconnected everything and figured I would send an email to customer service once the power was back on. Mind you, this all happened in mid 2020, which you may remember was "challenging" for all of us. 2020-06-03 - purchased 2020-06-05 - received \ basic testing 2020-06-11 - power outage \ burning smell 2020-06-12 - contacted Greenworks Tools 2020-06-19 - contacted them again since nothing other than an automated response had shown up 2020-07-05 - window to return product elapsed 2020-08-06 - received a response requesting more information I thought I had provided 2020-08-06 - got frustrated and ignored the message 2021-02-16 - finally stumbled upon the email again, and sent the information even though I thought it was redundant. Convenient and mobile

I already had 3 batteries, and I needed to plug in tools and a fan beyond the reach of extension cords. This keeps the fan going for at least 3 hours, and will run my saw as well.
Works great

This unit is great. I’m able to use it to power lights, charge phones, and even ran my laptop on it for nearly 3 hours. I used my oldest and weakest 2.0 battery. My 4 and 5.0 batteries will be amazing on this. This product keeps me from having to get my big Jackery generator out for short power outages.
Great product for all my Greenworks batteries

Having invested in the Greenworks ecosystem, this inverter is perfect for mobile electronics. Works well for small electric fans and accessories, even charged small laptops. Never even noticed the fan noise, but it has only been used outside with lots of folks around. A 5-star review would have been a pure sine wave inverter, and I would have paid extra for it. Otherwise, a great accessory to have around. Update: July 20, 2022 Attempted to use it to power a blender (1000 watt). The blades did a partial rotation and stopped. The inverter became very hot - no smoke or smoky smell. Just stopped working. Probably fried the board. Oops :( Lesson learned. This is for very small electrical devices with small current draws in a pinch. Not Greenworks fault at all. It died doing something that it wasn't designed to do. Otherwise, use a more powerful inverter! LOL! FYI, plugged the blender into my Jackery rated for 200 watts and it blended the ice like a champ. Go figure.
Works for Ryobi too (with some work)

I used this to make my own version of a 40v Ryobi 300w inverter. Ryobi sells their own, but I bought and return ed 3 in a span of 2 weeks. All failing in odd ways, one of them ended up almost catching fire, hah! Whoops! Greenworks inverter here, uses just 2 wires on the connector. Positive and negative. No smarts on connecting to the battery. So apply 40v, and it just works. I cut the greenworks connector off, spliced in a Ryobi connector, and blamo! Ryobi inverter! What actually makes this safe, is that Ryobis batteries have the protection built into them. So if ya pull too much watts, the battery itself shuts off. Voltage gets too low? Battery shuts itself off. They are actually pretty nice. Also, this inverter is marked as 300w, but I've been able to pull 350! The fan runs on super slow if there is no load and ramps up when the load goes up. It's not loud really. The inverter is all metal construction. Unlike Ryobis all plastic version. The USB's actually work! 2 of them. All three of the Ryobi ones died, hah! They would charge when I first got it, then just... Stop working! This inverter is better in every way. If ya know how to do it, they sell the Ryobi 3D printer battery connector for 40v batteries. Make your own. Or just buy into greenworks batteries. I hear those aren't too bad either!

Handy to have if you’ve got several greenworks batteries

Since all 6 of my greenworks batteries were fully charged, I bought this inverter when my power was out for 5 days following a hurricane. It was enough to charge up my phone and run a lamp at night, which was all I wanted to do. I’ll probably use it again in the future.
Caused electronics to melt and smoke

My thoughts on this product are torn. On one hand, it's great knowing that my always charged Greenworks batteries can be used as a backup power source if needed. For that reason, this is a great product because it makes the expensive batteries more useful. The problem is that this inverter caused one of the devices I plugged into it to melt and smoke. My power was out, so I decided to use this inverter to power my home network router and internet cable modem, so that I could stay online on my laptop. I connected a power strip with the router and modem to the inverter and everything worked fine for about an hour. The laptop was never connected to the inverter. I then plugged my phone into the USB port of the inverter while the power strip (with router and modem connected) was still plugged in. Within a few minutes I smelled something burning and found that the power supply of the cable modem was melted and smoking. The cable modem did not seem damaged, but it no longer worked because its power supply was ruined. It seems as though the connection of my phone to the USB port, which is a DC power draw, caused the AC power draw to change enough to fry the power supply of my modem, but I can't be sure that the failure wouldn't have occurred anyway, even if I never connected the phone. I tried connecting a computer uninterrupted power supply (UPS backup battery) to the Greenworks inverter as a way to filter/clean the AC signal coming out of the inverter, but the UPS immediately began to buzz loudly. That buzzing and the melted modem power supply seems to indicate that the AC power coming out of the inverter is not as "normal" as one would hope. A bit of research shows that some inverters produce bad sine waves. That's beyond my understanding, but it seems like this Greenworks inverter might be among the bad ones that can harm electronics due to irregular AC power output. For these reasons, I can't trust this inverter for anything other than powering very cheap/simple things, like lights. I will also never leave it unattended, nor will I use both the AC plug and the USB ports simultaneously.

I've been looking for a product to utilize the power in Greenworks batteries I have for other tools. This was a reasonably priced way to get to the power in those batteries during a power outage. Simple to use, nice to have standby.

Excellent value for those of us that already own Greenworks products. Do keep in mind this is a modified sine wave inverter. I have used it to watch TV, power laptop, wifi router, modem. One of the two TV's I used it with had a slight buzzing sound, the other performed perfectly.
